Tropical Island Resort: PV + BESS + Diesel Smart Microgrid
SiRay Energy delivered a PV + BESS + diesel microgrid for a luxury tropical island resort in Southeast Asia. The system turns tropical sunshine into reliable 24/7 power, removing the resort's dependence on diesel-only generation while keeping seamless backup through the monsoon.
- 580 kWsolar PV
- > 1 MWhcontainerized BESS
- 2+diesel gensets
- 24/7uninterrupted supply
Project Overview
The resort previously ran entirely on diesel generators. Peak load across guest villas, restaurants, water sports facilities and back-of-house operations exceeded 580 kW. Rising fuel cost, noise and emissions were working against the resort's eco-luxury positioning. The client asked for a turnkey renewable system that keeps diesel as backup for extended rain.
Solar Photovoltaic System
Rooftop arrays across guest villas and main facilities, with additional capacity near the waterfront for unobstructed tropical sun.
Energy Storage & Backup
-
Containerized BESS
Over 1 MWh of lithium-ion storage in climate-controlled containers, giving hours of autonomous operation.
-
Diesel Backup
Multiple high-efficiency gensets with acoustic enclosures.
-
PV Inverters
A centralized inverter room with multi-channel MPPT.
Power Distribution
Dedicated transformers and low-voltage switchgear with intelligent protection tie the microgrid into the resort's existing electrical infrastructure.
Intelligent EMS Control
A touchscreen HMI gives real-time SCADA visualisation of PV generation, battery state of charge, genset status and load. The EMS switches automatically between grid-tied, island and backup modes: surplus solar charges the battery, and the battery discharges through the evening and cloudy weather.
Key Achievements
- 580 kW of solar PV across the resort complex
- Over 1 MWh of containerized battery storage for autonomous island operation
- Diesel fuel consumption reduced by 50-70% through PV-priority dispatch
- Seamless 24/7 power for all guest and operational facilities
- Remote monitoring and automated genset scheduling through the EMS
- Containerized design kept civil works on the island to a minimum
